A little taste of Spicy Bexus:

So you are also breathing, huh? Well, isn’t that lucky! And unless you’re having a picnic on Mount Everest, that shouldn’t be a big deal for most of us. But if we want to travel through space or start Mars colonization, breathing will suddenly become a little tricky.

As we speak, astronauts on the ISS are breathing oxygen derived from their own bodily fluids and water transported up from earth. The terrestrial water provides for 60% of the oxygen on the space station, but costs fortunes in money and energy to transport and maintain. As humanity strives for further and further distances, this water dependency may become the limiting factor!

As a team of rather „breathable“ biologists, aerospace and electrical engineers, designers and software developers we want to make oxygen supply in space more energy efficient and less dependent on terrestrial supply chains. Our answer: Cyanobacteria!

In a nutshell, we are developing an experiment that – thanks to the @rexus_bexus program, as well as the @germanaerospacecenter , @rymdstyrelsen_snsa , @europeanspaceagency , @ssc_space , and #ZARM – will fly through our planet’s stratosphere. REXUS stands for the rocket and BEXUS (our vehicle) for the stratospheric balloon.

See you soon!
